T-Shirt Contest Deadline Extended!

EXTENDED THROUGH DECEMBER 18!

Calling all artists! We’ve got an opportunity for fame and glory…at least among Ascendio attendees – and the creator of the winning design will win a one-day ticket to Universal Studios Orlando. We are looking for designs for the official Ascendio t-shirt, just as we did in the lead-up to past events, including Nimbus 2003 and Azkatraz. You can see a selection of designs for past HPEF events in our CafePress store (still under construction), but don’t feel bound by any styles or fonts we’ve used before.  Instead, since the Ascendio theme is “Flights of Fancy” please let that inspire your creativity.

$200 for a Full Registration through CyberMonday

Thought you ought to know…

We’ve extended our $200 rate for a Full Registration through CyberMonday (November 28), so your Ascendio registration can be a great kick-off to the holiday season! Remember what’s included in a Full registration:

  • Two fantastic feasts

The Welcome & Leaving Feast really add to the Harry Potter experience. And ensure you don't forget to eat (it happens).

  • Three days of formal and informal programming and meet-ups
  • All author readings and signings
  • Access to the Common Room, Art Gallery, Vendor Room, Craft Faire and Courtyard
  • Pickup Quidditch
  • The Afterparty at Malfoy Manor Ball (which we may come up with a better name for)
  • Showings of fanfilms, fanvids and some Harry Potter movies
  • Podcasts, workshops, drabble and drawble challenges
  • The Fashion Show on Saturday evening
  • Wrock concerts on Thursday (and acoustic wrock concerts throughout the weekend)
  • The ability to purchase a ticket to our private Park event (when they go on sale)

And lots more! Basically, this means that the cost of a Full registration is the same as you’d pay for a daypass for Thursday, Friday and Saturday, but since it’s a Full registration, you also get to go to two amazing feasts at the Portofino Bay resort – one brunch on Friday, and one brunch on Sunday. You get the entire Ascendio experience!

Leaving Feast, yum!

Call for Authors!

Since our first event, Nimbus – 2003, HPEF events have included among their attendees fanfic writers who’ve gone on to write novels that have been on the New York Times Best Seller lists, made into films, and resulted in fandoms that have spawned fanfic of their own. We’re also very proud of our history of showcasing YA, fantasy and genre authors, including Naomi Novik, Sarah Rees Brennan, Karen Healey, Tamora Pierce, Holly Black, Charles De Lint and more, at readings, on panels and in signings. We’ve created programming sessions around and for authors who’ve published with smaller houses, those who’ve self-published, and those who choose to write fanfiction (and these days, there’s definitely some overlap between those categories).

As you’ve seen from our recent announcements, we’re already assembling a slate of terrific published authors for Ascendio, including Aimee Carter, Lev Grossman and Beth Revis – and that list will only grow! We’re planning workshops on pitching novels to agents, writing fanfic and original novels, the NaNoWriMo experience, changes to the publishing industry and more. And as we did at Azkatraz, we’re asking self-published authors who’re registered for Ascendio to get in touch with us if they’re interested in doing a reading and a signing; at Dragon*Con, Janine Spendlove signed up for the first slot.

If you’re an author, and you’re interested in doing a reading/signing, or participating in a panel , please contact our Author Coordinator, Ravenna C. Tan, at authors@hp2012.org. We’re hoping to see you – and read your books! – at Ascendio!

Ascendio Maximus! (We’re Adding a Thursday Day-Pass)

Since we started planning Ascendio back in 2010, we’ve planned to host meet-ups, Common Room activities, the Fan Art Gallery and the Vendor Room on Thursday, but at our site visit last month, it became clear to us that we could do more with our Thursday plans.

First thing’s first:  We’re in the process of adding an afternoon of Wrock concerts and other entertainment, and to make the day accessible to everyone, we’re also introducing a Thursday-only Day Pass, priced at only $50.

The Thursday Pass will give you access to all programming on Thursday, including Wrock concerts featuring The Butterbeer Experience, Gryffindor Common Room Rejects, Carpe Geekdom and more bands who’ll be announced this winter.

ETA (Feb. 7): We’ve added The Whomping Willows, Lauren Fairweather, The Blibbering Humdingers, Hawthorn & Holly and Alex Boyd to our Wrock roster! Check out clips from their performances at Infinitus here!

Thursday passholders also get to hang out in the Common Room, shop the Vendor Room, explore the Art Gallery and more! (We’re waiting for some AV info from the hotel before we can confirm fanfilm showings on Thursday, for example). And, of course, every Ascendio registrant – regardless of the day – is invited to our To The Manor Ball!

You’ll also be able to purchase a ticket to our Thursday night private park event with a Day Pass for Thursday, Friday or Saturday!

On our Registration Page you can register for a Thursday Pass (or get a multiday pass) – but here’s the biggest news: if you already have a Full registration, we’re including access to all programming, concerts and events at the hotel on Thursday with your registration! So basically you’re getting another full day of Ascendio programming for the same price! Talk about bang for buck.

Now, for some math. The Friday and Saturday Passes are still $75 per day, which means that for a few lucky people, you can purchase a Full Registration for the same price of Day Passes for Thursday, Friday and Saturday! $50 + $75×2 = $200… and we have about a dozen $200 Full Registrations left. The price of a Full Registration will go up to $225 later this month. Even once it does, if you want to enjoy Harry Potter discussions, fan creativity and magic on all three days, you might want to opt for a Full Registration, which includes two feasts and only costs $25 more than the three day passes. And the meals? They’re definitely worth more than twenty five dollars!

We hope you’re as excited about our expanded Thursday programming as we are. Not only do we feel it gives those with Full and Merlin’s Circle’s registrations even more to do, but hope that the $50 Day registration for Thursday ”Wrock Day” and other programming will make Ascendio possible for both Wrock fans and those on a budget. Whether you come for the whole con or mix and match day registrations and individual event tickets, we want all Harry Potter fans to find something at Ascendio, and have a great con!

(Oh, and if you can come up with a better name than “Wrock Day” for our Thursday programming, and we opt to use it for the event, we’ll send you a lovely Ascendio lunch bag! Send your suggestions to pr@hp2012.org.)

If you’re going to the Quidditch World Cup…

You can pick up an Ascendio pin on Randall’s Island – we’ll have the exact location for you that weekend at the HPEF Twitter; follow us for specifics.  We’ll also have the Ascendio Street Team out on the Island, handing around Ascendio postcards and a few lunch bags for lucky Quidditch players and fans.

Quidditch has long been a part of HPEF events; one of the first Quiditch games played by Muggles was hosted at Nimbus 2003, and the first Water Quidditch match took place at Lumos in Las Vegas in 2006. At Infinitus, Kristina Moy presented about the IQA’s structure, rules and gameplay, and instructed attendees on how to start their own Quidditch teams. On the playing fields, the IQA also played a demonstration game and hosted a scrimmage for new players under IQA rules.

We’re planning to host some amazing Quidditch activities at Ascendio, on the playing field and in the meet-up rooms.

The Quidditch World Cup takes place on Randall’s Island in New York City on November 12 and 13; tickets are still available if you want to catch a few games!

The Return of Chris Rankin

Actor Chris Rankin from the Harry Potter filmsAscendio is excited to announce that Harry Potter actor and HP convention veteran Chris Rankin will be a special guest at Ascendio 2012. Chris, who plays Percy Weasley in many of the Harry Potter films, including Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows II, has previously attended HPEF’s The Witching Hour and been a special guest at our Azkatraz and Infinitus events, as well as The Leaky Cauldron’s LeakyCon 2011. He also has an extensive theater background, having performed in pantomimes and plays such as Dick Whittington, Jack & the Beanstalk, Hedda Gabler and Salome.

Hugely fascinated by Harry Potter fandom — and welcomed by it — Chris has focused his university thesis on fandom, and is excited to present his work at Ascendio — a Harry Potter actor-special guest first!

Other events featuring Chris will be announced at a later time — but rest assured, Chris will present, do a Q&A, sign Harry Potter DVDs and more!
